Bug Description

mute button allocated in keyboard shortcuts, it will show muted or un-muted but just decreases speaker sound level with every push

seems to affect hp laptops and particularly DV6000 series which mute button was blue and now turned red.
-discussed on ubuntu forums and as requested outputs

Mixers:
0: Conexant CXT5045

using
1:conexant CXT5045 with OSS mute is always red, shows muting but zero mute effect
using
0:NDA NVidia (alsa mixer) -same issue as above

Also impacting me on my HP DV6000t laptop. Muting the mixer using the mouse and menu options works fine.
Pressing the Mute button shows a Blue on Gray (HP-provided?) "Mute on" or "Mute off" message in the middle of the screen, but no muting occurs.

I believe it worked well at a previous version of Feisty. In fact, I'm positive it worked recently, because I only upgraded to Feisty a little over a week ago, and was amazed that audio was working completely (I used to have issues with the headphone jack in Edgy).
