Bug Description

I was running printconfig to config my printer and I got this:

Configuring Epson Stylus C42 on usb:/dev/usblp0 with gutenprint driver as queue
"stylus_c42".
Cannot read file /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/gutenprint.xml!
Driver file /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/gutenprint.xml corrupted, missing, or not readable!
Could not run "foomatic-combo-xml"/"foomatic-perl-data"! at /usr/share/perl5/Foomatic/DB.pm line 571

The workaround I've found is linking a fake gutenprint.xml to gutenprint-ijs.5.0.xml btw I think that this error should be fixed both here and/or in printconfig...

The strange thing for me here is that if there is no file /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/driver/gutenprint.xml you should never get offered the choice of the "gutenprint" driver. For me it looks like that foomatic-gui is caching and this cache is outdated.

Rejecting gutenprint.

For me it looks like the same as bug #52581. The setup tool seems to always create a menu entry for the recommended driver as defined in the Foomatic printer XML file, even if an appropriate driver XML file or PPD does not exist. It should not do so and behave if there was no recommended driver.

Epson Stylus C86 is not even a option in your gui. The only option is for Stylus which we can see gives the wrong driver. My guess this is for all Espson Stylus C printers not just mine. I do not think this is a KDE issue because PCLinuxOS does not have this problem so I have not switched to that distro for my print server on my other machine. This is not a problem in Ubuntu because it gives the option for all Epson C printers in the gui drop down menu. Fix this problem and I may come back to Kubuntu but until it is is fixed I will stick with several other KDE distros that do not seem to have a problem configuring my Epson Stylus C86.

According to the upstream Debian bug report this should be fixed since foomatic-gui 0.7.8 (so since Ubuntu Intrepid).
