Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I had left r-b up for the day to let it download all my podcasts while I was out. When I came back, r-b was unable to play my podcasts (clicking play had no effect, the button would depress, but wouldn't stay depressed, and no sound would come out). I then quit r-b, and relaunched it (via the music-applet). At this point, my entire podcast subscription list was gone (I previously had around 43 feeds).

I've looked back through my xsession-errors file and search through .gconf/apps/rhythmbox and .gnome2/rhythmbox for my subscribed feeds, but there were no files containing them. The Podcasts directory did remain, so previously downloaded casts are available to play from nautilus/totem.

It also seems to have lost my last.fm and internet radio "stations".

I can't say i've had the same problem, but without steps to reproduce i think this is going to be near impossible to pin-point.

The rythmbox database is locate /home/$USER/.gnome2/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml . It is possible that the xml file has become malformed; you may be able to recover your feeds by looking through it. However unless this issue gets some "me to" i don't think we can consider it a bug at this stage.

Hooray for transient user data loss!

Yeah, I looked through rhythmdb.xml. None of my podcasts, internet radio, or last.fm stations were there. It seems like the file was simply erased when I quit r-b. It was probably recreated when r-b was started and populated with just the details of my local music library.

I can't imagine how or why r-b would do this to my rhythmdb.xml file. Other stuff in the .gnome2/rhythmbox directory look OK (the covers directory still has the icons for my old feeds.

Did your user directory runned out of free space or something like that? To debug that problem a way to trigger the problem would be nice, there is no other bug open about that for the moment

No, as far as I know it didn't run out of free space. I know it's going to be essentially impossible to uncover the cause, because I haven't been able to repeat the problem. It just sucks that such a thing could happen. Maybe there is an unlink(2) call somewhere in r-b that occurs in some weird error condition, maybe not...

I guess this is closable as non-reproducable. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Closing for now then, feel free to reopen if you can get extra details on what trigerred the problem or if that happens again
