Bug Description
I have finally determined that this problem is with Edgy amd64, not OpenOffice.org. Here is why:
I have used OOo since forever and never had a problem with drag and drop of text. (E.g., drag a clause from the end of the sentence to the front of the sentence.) It worked fine up to OOo 2.0.2 on Dapper. Doing an apt-get dist-upgrade from Dapper amd64 to Edgy amd64 upgraded the OOo 2.0.2 package to 2.0.4 as well. Afterwards I have been unable to drag and drop text in a Writer document.
I have been searching off and on for the solution for over a month with no luck. Yesterday I found 64-bit .deb files for OOo 2.1. I deleted 2.0.4 (complete removal via Synaptic) and installed 2.1 instead. Afterwards drag and drop editing of text was still broken. Conclusion: The problem is not in OOo.
I now have a list of six Edgy amd64 users who have been bitten by this bug. Here is a forum thread where some of us have discussed it:

If six of us have reported it, undoubtedly many more have been hit by it but haven't said anything publicly.
It may be as simple as a missing module or library. And admittedly there are few of us. But whatever it is needs to be fixed because evidently it will continue into Feisty and future releases. I will do whatever I can to assist in fixing it. Thanks!
