Bug Description

I haven't been able to logout or shutdown or hibernate ever since I dist-upgraded to Feisty. Can't figure out what is wrong, don't know where to look. When I choose one of the above action the screen just goes blank and nothing happens. I then need to hard-reboot or shutdown.

Using halt / shutdown now from terminal works.

Thank you for your bug. Could you look if there is anything to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog or /var/log/Xorg.0.log about that after a freeze of the computer? That looks like an xorg or linux problem rather than a GNOME one. What videocard and videodriver do you use?

There is nothing in the logs. I have attached the extract. As well as my
hardware specs.
I am using the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M and using the fglrx drivers for it.

Do you have the same problem if you use the ati driver rather than fglrx?

I replaced fglrx with vesa in the xorg.conf but suspend/hibernate still does not work. Logout and shutdown work if I am not using XGL and beryl.

How do I use ATI drivers? Any pointers?

Status:
Shutdown and restart are working

Hibernate, Suspend to not work on:
driver : ati / vesa / fglrx
XGL & Beryl disabled

Will try from gdm, also installing kubuntu-desktop to see if it works there.

Not sure if Bug #50031 is related, since everything was working great on edgy.

I changed to Kubuntu. On hibernate saw this:
Feb 27 21:27:11 hitesh-laptop kernel: [ 199.016000] swsusp: Cannot find swap device, try swapon -a.

I went to gparted and applied swapon my swap partition, then hibernate happens. But on restart it does not resume. Looks like the swap partition is not swapon'ed on boot. Do not know how to persist the change.

The problem _probably_ originated because I did a dist-upgrade after resuming and not clean booting.

I hope fixing the swapon will resolve the issue. But I an unable to set it permanently. Any help is appreciated.

Not a gnome-session bug, did you have your /etc/fstab listing the swap partition, has it been changed?

There was a problem in fstab. The uuid for the swap partition was incorrect.
Fixed that.
But the original issue remains. And now logout stopped working as well.
I will do a full install, not dist-upgrade, and post my results.

After clean installing from the daily build live CD, everything is working
perfectly, even with the ATI (fglrx) drivers.

Will install XGL & beryl next to see if the problem is related to Beryl or
dist-upgrade

If I create the /etc/X11/sessions folder and the the XGL.desktop file to use XGL with beryl, logout does not work (gdm / keyboard hangs on logout). Removing the folder fixes the issue.

Where did your read about creating a '/etc/X11/sessions' folder? The documentation I read had me create a '.desktop' file in '/usr/share/xsessions/'. Please give that a try. Thanks again.

This seems to work, I can logout cleanly. Unfortunately my ATI driver
has been replaced with mesa for some reason and XGL does not work with
it. May be an issue with the 20.13 kernel release. Will try the
previous kernel and open another bug if there is a regression

This looks like an issue with the ATI driver. If I boot with 2.6.20-13-generic, the mesa driver is loaded
$ fglrxinfo

display: :0.0 screen: 0

and the logout works, but if I boot to 2.6.20-12-generic, the ATI driver loads, and logout does not work. Is there something I can do to give you more details?

I have Pavilion zv6000 (I think I have ATI Radeon Xpress 200M too) and Everything goes just black when I try to log out, switch user, suspend or use terminal (I mean this ctrl+alt+f(1-6) -terminal.

This all happened when I updated EE to FF. I also had some kind of problems with screen resolution with EE but this didn't occure always.

In terminal I may be able to see text for period of one millisecond or something (it flickers).

J. Hack could you confirm if you do have the same type of video card by examining and adding the full output of 'lspci -vvn' as an attachment to your bug report. If you do not have the same type of video card please open a new bug and assign to me. Thanks!
