Bug Description

When I decrease/increase the volume via the keyboard, Ubuntu sometimes (very often) freezes. The music keeps going but I cannot do anything as its frozen.

If I decrease/increase the volume through the volume icon on top right corner it works OK.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? What window manager do you use? Do you use a composite manager? Can you still switch to a command line with ctrl-alt-F1 when that happens? Do you have anything to /var/log/messages /var/log/syslog or /var/log/Xorg.0.log about that?

Yes, when it freezes I can yo to a command line.

( 2 ) By the way, when I decrease the volume until it reaches the minimum (silent) and does not freeze, I cannot increase it using the keyboard. I have to do it manually with gnome's the volume bar.

I cannot find anything related to the problem in those files, neither reproduce the freeze. I can reproduce ( 2 ).

marking unconfirmed, I don't have that problem, maybe somebody else can trigger it and will pick on the debug

I can't reproduce it either.

Can you run
  tail -f -n 0 ~/.xsession-errors
in a terminal, then try to make it break and copy the output here afterwards?

It does not freeze anymore! Good thing.

But when volume reaches 0 (quiet), I cannot increase it with the keyboard, I have to do it manually.

Can you look if you have any error to .xsession-errors when you try to increate it with the keyboard?

marking unconfirmed, to be worked by somebody getting the problem. Do you still have your Ubuntu freezing like mentionned by the bug description?

hotani (hotani) wrote : Having same problem in final with two separate gstreamer apps

This happens consistently in rhythmbox and totem when I attempt to change volume via keyboard (remote control mapped to volume in my case).

1- It only happens when Totem or Rhythmbox is the active application.
2- The freeze is complete; app is unresponsive; although it does keep playing, no other controls work
3- the freeze will bleed into other apps, causing them to be unresponsive as well. For example: I have totem open, try volume control, it locks up. I switch to firefox and try to do something, and it locks up for several seconds.

If in fullscreen mode, as one might imagine, it successfully locks me out of the entire system. This requires either a full desktop restart via ctrl+alt+backspace, or ssh in to kill Totem.

The problem also exists on other machines running Feisty when attempting to control volume with rhythmbox at the front. It is not fixed.

don't reopen a bug closed for over a year only because you have a similar issue, better to open a new bug, the code changed and it could be a totally different bug
