Bug Description

Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the steps for reproducing this error, but sometimes when I am working with libreoffice writer, switching between several running programs using alt+tab, the writer suddenly disappears both from the launcher and alt+tab menu. I have so far not been able to spot the system, but will tell you if I find it.

I do not know how to reproduce this bug, either. But I can attach a screenshot to prove this issue. It happens all the time and is very annoying, seriously hindering my workflow.

This happens for both Writer and Calc (haven't tested with other programs of the LibreOffice suite). I will try to make a video.

Confirmed, jasoncwarner reported similar issues during Oneiric testing and several people confirmed, it's usually easy to get by searching for "libreoffice" in the dash and running the startcenter icon (the white page one with a cut corner), then try to select one of the components on the startpage

I've uploaded a video displaying this issue to http://vimeo.com/e2jk/libreoffice-unity-lp862171
It should be visible in about 30 minutes.

Of course while taking the video it didn't want to fail at first, unlike with a previous take where it failed the first time I tried to reopen the document ;)

If you have multiple Libre Office windows (Writer, Calc) next to all your other applications open, and that some don't show in the Launcher, it makes it really difficult to switch tasks.

My wife lost a good part of her working day today as I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on her work laptop. Hopefully this can get fixed, as I don't want to fight with the wife! ;)

This issue also affects chrome, just after installing.
Chrome doesn't show in the launchers, not even in the ALT+TAB lists. But the windows are open in the background.
However, it is solved by logging in and logging out.

As above, it might affect other applications too. This would be very frustrating for a new user.

For me this bug also affected Thunderbird and VirtualBox. Even pressing ALT+TAB it's not possible to see the window.

Apparently, any program could be affected by this issue.

I can reproduce this consistently with Evolution. It's never appeared in the launcher, not even if I drag it from the dash into the launcher.

I also noticed that if I shade the window (double-click on the title bar), it disappears entirely. Since it's not in the launcher, I can't get it back at all.

I've found that logging in with the "Unity 2D" desktop makes the problem go away. Does this workaround help anyone else?

Hi, this bug affects me too. Here is how to reproduce it: uncheck "keep in launcher" for all libreoffice software (I really don't need them there all the time... ) Then go to some directory that contains some documents or spreadsheets and click them. On my machine (oneiric 32bit) this bug is reproduced 100% all the time. Note that if you use launcher to run the libreoffice directly, then its icon shows properly in dock and alt-tab works. I had the same bug for pidgin, and I solved it by adding an icon in unity dock. And yes, the bug is pretty annoying...

One more thing: Even if the icon is not show in dock and alt-tab doesnt work properly, the Expose (Super-W) still shows all windows, so you can use this until the bug is fixed.

Mistake: this "Then go to some directory that contains some documents or spreadsheets and click them." should be "Then go to some directory that contains some documents or spreadsheets and open them." because the method is not important e.g. you can doubleclick them or press enter, whatever..

And BTW: Unity really rocks! I waited for something like this for years...

I found another piece of strange behavior today. When I opened a .ppt file a generic LibreOffice icon appeared instead of the usual 'LO Impress' one.

The behavior I get is:
 - remove the "launcher" icon from the launcher
 - run the app
 - switch around on the same window with several apps
 - icon will go away in both the launcher and alt-tab screen
 - subsequent restarts of that app will fail to put a icon on the "launcher bar" until the next reboot.
  - run libreoffice again and it will go back to the app running

The app is running "in the background", but not visible/accessible via alt-tab or on the launcher.

Same bug. Two computers, upgrade from 11.04 64 bit & clean install 11.10 32 bit.
Icons randomly fail to appear, either completely either there is a "?" as if the icon is missing.

This bug is marked as a duplicate of #842566, but that bug's discussion seems only related to libreoffice. I see this bug manifest itself with Chrome and keepassx as well.
