Bug Description

While installing a few machines with Oneiric via network install via serial console, I encountered a kernel panic (see attached log). The panic was inconsistently reproduced as I was installing several machines and a reboot seemed to allow the installation to continue.

I initially thought that this was related to LP#818177, but I was told that it was not and asked to open this bug report.

We hit a similar / the same bug tonight while network booting a single server many times over. The bug hit periodically, but when it did it was repeatable for several boot cycles. See photo of the trace attached. While I'm not sure its related to bug #818177, the frequency of failed boots appears similar (for whatever thats worth)

Adam or Andrew, can you try patching your udev initramfs scripts with something like the patch from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/udev/+bug/833783/comments/17 to get a dump of the kernel events leading up to this failure?

(The first half of the patch needs to be moved to debian/udev.initramfs-nfs; probably "/sbin/udevadm settle || cat /dev/.udev.log" would make sense.)

Since bug #818177 is now fixed, it's probably worth retesting once there's an image that includes that updated udev package. I don't have high hopes for it fixing this, though, since that change was specific to a race on udevd shutdown.
