it is quite strange... the black line at the border is sometimes nice and sometimes dotted and very ugly... I don't really understand why it changes between different logins!

The gnome splash doesn"t support real transparency, you can only used the transparency as a mask like the gif transparency.

So, if you want a splash with corner the transparency of the pixel MUST be 0, and 255 for an opaque pixel.

Actually, borders and corners are "antialiased" and the transparency is between 1 and 254, in these cases, the splash renderer displayed these pixels as black pixels

There's some more (different) weird aliasing issues around the GDM login-border at the moment. Can the GDM splash be antialiased against the /average/ colour of the default background image?

The current splash should not have these problems. I have taken a 24bit png file exported from inkscape, opened it in gimp and semi-flattened the transparency to the bg color defined for the splash/wallpaper.

So, there should be no more black pixels around the edges or funky aliasing problems. However, there might still be slight artistical problems with the shadow/line around the splash. What exactly are you seeing?
