I should have mentioned that my computer is a desktop, and doesn't have a battery!!

This is intermittent - as it's setting up, if the screen goes to terminal mode and starts displaying setup line info the setup stops at the battery check. If it manages to avoid this (i.e. no lines are displayed), and gets to the log-in screen I can log in, get into ubuntu and it all seems to be OK.

Hi RIchard,
You say it stalls asking for battery status - do you have the exact text of the messages?
Please attach /var/log/kern.log and /var/log/boot.log from a good boot, but also if you can please attach a screen shot of
all the text when it fails.

Also, exactly what model of computer do you have?

Dave

Same problem here... started yesterday after an upgrade...
Startup hangs on "checking battery status", I can press alt+f1 and switch to another terminal but I cannot log in (login incorrect error).
Selecting "recovery mode" (from grub) and resuming the normal boot leads correctly to lightdm, but gnome shell starts in fallback mode.
Strangely grub shows me the debian theme at startup.

Sorry, problem showed today (2011/10/15), not yesterday as I wrote.
Yesterday everything was fine.

Hi Allessandro,
Thanks for that info - can you confirm the make and model of your computer; including the output of lspci -vvv as well.
It'll be interesting to see what you share in common with Richard.

As for the debian logo, lets assume for a minute that's separate (unless Richard also sees it).

Hi Dave, thanks for your help.
I assembled my pc by myself.

Main spec:

- MOTHERBOARD > Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 ( http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3567#sp )
- CPU > AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1100T Processor
- GRAPHIC CARD > SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E
- RAM > 8 GB
- WIRELESS NETWORK: TP-Link TL-WN951N PCI card
- Disks...
- Lg DVD writer

I also have a Logitech G15 plugged in with g15daemon software installed to control the LCD.

* Update *
Installing ati proprietary driver (using additional drivers tool) fixed the problem.
I still see debian's theme at startup but that's easy to handle.
Gnome 3 doesn't work as it should but that's a known bug and we are waiting for it to be fixed.
