non-free packages installed without adequate warnings

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

In Feisty:

1 Edit sources.list to exclude multiverse.
2 apt-get update.
3 Click on add/remove software, and find either
"ubuntu restricted extras" and "xine extra plugins"
4. install both

Although the description of ubuntu restricted extras mentions multiverse, several multiverse packages are installed without prompting me to change my repositories! This is much to easy a slip into non-free. Xine extra plugins (which is just libxine-extracodecs) doesn't mention that it is in multiverse. I do want some of these packages, but e.g. not flashplugin-nonfree.

In any case, I was not asked to update my repositories, and my sources.list still exclude multiverse after this exercise, though several packages were installed from said repository:

jan@dikkop:~$cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://proxy.aims.ac.za/apt-cacher/za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty main restricted universe #multiverse
deb http://proxy.aims.ac.za/apt-cacher/za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-updates main restricted universe #multiverse
deb http://proxy.aims.ac.za/apt-cacher/security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security main restricted universe #multiverse

The said packages should require a repository change with all the attached warnings and information about non-free software.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please check /etc/apt/sources.list.d as well if there is still a enabled multiverse repository? g-a-i should always ask a question before enabling a additional repository).

Cheers,
 Michael

I find this:

0 jan@dikkop:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ls
feisty-multiverse.list
0 jan@dikkop:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$cat feisty-multiverse.list
# automatically added by gnome-app-install on 2007-02-23 16:13:38.802148
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-security multiverse
deb http://proxy.aims.ac.za/apt-cacher/za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-updates multiverse

That was automatically added with no notification.

regards,
Jan

Thanks for this additional information.

I can not reproduce the issue here. Here is what I did:
* delete "multiverse" from /etc/apt/sources.list
* remove the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/feisty-multiverse.list
* apt-get update
* open g-a-i
* click on "ubuntu-restricted-extras" -> I got a dialog saying:
"""
Install unsupported and restricted software?

The use, modification and distribution of Ubuntu restricted extras is restricted by copyright or by legal terms in some countries.

You need a working internet connection to continue.
""""

Can you please check again that from a clean multiverse-free install this issue is reproducable? If so, please let me know about the steps so that I can fix it.

thanks,
 MIchael

I finally got around to this.

Note I am using a feisty alternate CD, not the Live CD.

Multiverse is enabled by default after a fresh install!
The lines in /etc/apt/sources.list are simply uncommented.
There is nothing in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

After commenting them out, and updating, and running g-a-i,
and searching for 'restricted', I have to click show
"All available applications" since "Supported ubuntu
applications" is the default. When I check Ubuntu Restricted
Extras, I get the correct queries: Install unsupported and
restricted software? and the warning of copyright/legality...

So the g-a-i bug can be cleared. feisty alternate seems
to have one though.

thanks,
Jan

If you are not familiar with the structure of the configuration files, please use the graphical tools Software Sources (feisty) or Software Properties (edgy) to enable and disable repositories.
