Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

After installing nvidia-glx from repost, X says it could not load the nvidia kernelmodule.
Only driver "nv" works. My card is a Nvidia 6200

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.04

I can confirm. I went through the files installed, and it looks as if the wrapper is never compiled- there is no nvidia.ko (though there is a nvidiafb.ko and a nvidia-agp.ko).

I tried to switch from a custom-compiled version to the vanilla Ubuntu version, and this came up, so it may be that some sort of on-install check is failing, thus causing the module to not compile.

same here. nvidia.ko is nowhere to be found...

I have extracted all related .deb files and the module is definitely not there!

The current release seems to have fixed this, nvidia-glx is working for 2.6.20-12-generic.

not for me!

There is no module nvidia.ko after booting with linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-12-generic.

see Bug #93742

Go to /lib/modules and run:
find . -name "nvidia.ko"

to see if it's installed for any other kernels. If you are sure you're running the -generic kernel, you could try running 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-restricted-modules-generic'.

Finally I found the 'bug'. I just learned about a file I didn't know about before.

In /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common was:
DISABLED_MODULES="nv"

I changed this and the module is in its .../volatile directory.

The default file in the package 'linux-restricted-modules-common' has an empty string, so I don't know why this was set to "nv". Maybe the nvidia modules were disabled in edgy? So this should be replaced when upgrading to feisty.

It is fixed for me with today's update.

The nvidia.ko file is actually here:
/lib/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-12-generic/nvidia/nvidia.mod.o

I have softlinked this file into the place where nvidia.ko goes and the driver is now working

Just installed the Beta. When I install the nvidia-glx driver from the repository it brings in an updated kernel which is not SMP. Why is it tied to a non generic kernel ?

Sascha:
Do you still have this problem after applying all the Feisty updates?

Loom:
That sort of problem occurs if you have used 3rd party tools like envy to enable 3d support at some point in the past then upgrade and try and use the default Ubuntu nvidia binary drivers.

That sounds like an issue unrelated to this one. Please file a separate bug report if it is still happening.

No need to file a new bug. That particular issue looks like Bug #68621.

Cool. Am now updated to the release version. Good work cos everything
works except resume when I have 3D desktop enabled.
