Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

On Feisty:

jan@dikkop:~$groups
sysadm adm dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev lpadmin scanner admin impronet
(which I get from /etc/security/group.conf and /etc/pam.d/common-auth)

Yet gnome-volume-manager, the icon in the panel ahs a red cross on it as when you do not have permissions.

jan@dikkop:~$ls -l /dev/dsp

0 jan@dikkop:~$ls -l /dev/audio
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 Feb 22 15:20 /dev/audio

When I click to open gnome-volume-manager I get a dialog box saying: "No volume conrtol GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

When I run it from the command line nothing happens.

gnome-volume-control starts OK from the command line. Everything looks OK there.

Rhythmbox plays an ogg file, volume seems to be on there, but no sound.

jan@dikkop:~$ps ax|grep esd

 6772 ? S 1:37 /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 1 -spawnfd 25

This sound worked perfectly on dapper and edgy:

Sorry, I left out the important part.
Totem-gstreamer is installed.
Totem does play with proper sound, no errors,
the Ubuntu sax ;)

(Rhythmbox does not).

Thank you for your bug. What audiosink is configured to gstreamer-properties? Could you remove the applet from your panel, run /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 from a command line, add the applet to the panel (it will use the instance waiting on the command line), and note if there is any error printed?

Default Output: Autodetect. The test produces a beep. The beep is there
when I change that to any of ALSA, ESD, OSS, Custom (osssink).

No (just locales)

   jan@dikkop:~$/usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2
   (mixer_applet2:30587): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
    Using the fallback 'C' locale.
   (mixer_applet2:30587): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library
   (gnome-volume-control:30605): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.

It seems above the applet added from the GUI, right click on panel,
add "volume control", is not mixer_applet2? This test produced an applet
that was working fine, didn't show any errors, no red cross, and it
opens a volume control when one clicks on it, which seems to work.

When I removed this from the panel he command line instance stopped.

Then I added again, without a command line instance running. It has the red
cross again. The first time I click it, it says:

The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.

Thereafter (once I closed that) it is back to the original error from
a feisty install (btw, another machine, edgy dist-upgrade to feisty, does
not do this).

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found"

Jan
