Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Hi,

today I made a feisty update and after rebooting, the X server doesn't come up and tells me, that it "could not open default font 'fixed'".

I reinstalled xfonts-base but it didn't help.

Thank you for your bug. Could you run "ls -ld /usr/share/X11/fonts" and copy that to a comment? When did you install your Ubuntu? Did you modify things by hand to workaround some xorg breakage since you installed it? The problem is likely that /usr/share/X11/fonts -> /usr/share/fonts/X11 has not been created because the directory was already existing on your box

Hi,

I've installed Ubuntu since 5.10. And I'm using feisty since weeks.

The ls -ld fonts showed only:
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2007-01-04 00:24 fonts

My Xorg has no known workarounds, it just breaked after the update.

The workaround mentioned in bug report #88254 worked for me:

- move the existing /usr/share/X11/fonts somewhere, then do `apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg`

But this isn't very good for normal users :-)
