On an up to date Feisty:

* Set Clock type to Internet time

The applet makes the whole gnome-panel stop and restart a few times until it's gone for good.

I can confirm this bug, only that I did it with Unix time, don't know if I have to open a new bug report or comment on this.

I confirm Unix time has this bug as well. For the record, the solution to have panel back was "sudo mv /usr/lib/gnome-panel/libclock-applet.so /usr/lib/gnome-panel/libclock-applet.so~" and then remove the applet from the panel.

A bette workaround is probably to just remove the configuation directory as you do not need superuser rights for this.

I changed the title of the bug to make easier for people that have the same problem but with the UNIX time to find the bug.

This upload fixes the bug:

 gnome-panel (2.18.0-0ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream version:
     Panel:
     - Fix large height of the menubar, which forced the panel size to
       be at least 28.
     - Fix alignment of widgets in the Run button (Ubuntu: #89421)
     Clock Applet:
     - Fix crash when using internet time (Ubuntu: #88939)
     Misc:
     - Add a .desktop file for bug-buddy integration
     - Require pango 1.15.4 for the clock applet too
   * debian/patches/12_autoconf.patch:
     - updated
   * debian/patches/90_from_svn_fix_panel_width_when_using_menu.patch:
     - dropped, fixed with the new version
