Bug Description

Sorry if this is the wrong place but, I am having an issue with the command KDESU "SH /CDROM/CDROMUPGRADE" not working. I have tried it and get a request for a password. My CD-ROM spins up and then nothing. The CD-ROM then spins down.

I have also tried the command, KDESU "SH /CDROM0/CDROMUPGRADE". A request for a password is sent. I input my passoword and then I get an error message that reads," Command 'sh /cdrom0/cdromupgrade' not found". I would like to upgrade to Edgy Eft for Kubuntu and will not try it through Adept after my last mishap which, toasted my system. Adept download Gnome and NOT! KDE and over-wrote the current KDE install. It was nasty.

If there is no solution, I have to export all my settings and backup Giga-Bytes of data beyond what I have done with my personal data and then run the Edgy Install as if there were no O.S. on my machine. I don't want to do that either. My CD-ROM is shown on the desktop and it is mounted. I can also browse my CD-ROM and see all the Edgy files.

I don't understand which release of Kubuntu have you currently installed.
If you have installed Dapper and have a bandwidth connection I advice to use the procedure shown in this page: http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php.
You can use apt-cdrom if you want to upgrade the system using your cd.
Feel free to report any other problems.

Sorry, but I have noticed in this moment that package update-manager is not installed by default in Kubuntu. You need to install this package before the upgrade following the procedure that you have reported.
Update-manager doesn't need if you use apt-cdrom.

Hi Maini Marco,

Thank you for looking into my issue and responding so quickly. Pleased see
the attached screen shot of my new problem with "update-manager".

I have Kubuntu Dapper 6.06 and I have an Update Manager called, "Adept
Package Manager". It has updated my machine on a regular basis but I cannot
upgrade to Edgy Eft 6.10 as you know.

Adept has often problems performing an upgrade to new release.
Try with this:
open a Konsole and insert the cd;
run the following commands
sudo apt-cdrom
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop python-qt3 python-kde3 ubuntu-minimal

Remind to change all words "dapper" in "edgy" editing the file /etc/apt/sources.list (you must be root).

Please report any other problems.

Hi Miani Marco,

When I type "sudo apt-cdrom" (without quotes) on a command line in a console
I receive the displayed error message in the attached screen shot.

Our Current position is with "Apt-cdrom". See what apt-cdrom resonds with when I type it in with the attached screen shot.

Thanks,

There was a mistake in my previous comment. The correct command is "sudo apt-cdrom add" (without quotes obviouvsly).

Since Feisty is just around the corner, I have decided to wait for Feisty. (Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have spent little time on my computer since your last send.) I am hopping that the Feisty ISO file will include a simple Upgrade Feature where Kubuntu and Ubuntu can understand an installation is in existence and Upgrade on its own. (If not in Feisty, sometime in the next 2 future Releases.) Or maybe have an "Upgrade Current" as an option on the list that appears when the CD is first launched. This would then handle the upgrade which would look for updated drivers and correct the required file entries as needed to. This is just to complex right now! It's causing thoughts of going back to Microsoft. - Never mind I have not been able to get my nVidia gForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x Video Card on a VT 8237 P.C.I. Bridge to work properly. I cannot run OpenGL because the Drivers in the Repositories crash the system and require complex command line knowledge to fix. I ended up reloading the system some time ago and have lived without the FULL functionality of the card ever since. Not wanting to revisit that mess!

This is an old card and should have driver support built-in to Kubuntu, especially since Linux Drivers are available at nVidia! There is to much command line work and file editing to bother with with the drivers from nVidia. I have also found many sources on this subject all cannot agree and what needs changing in the files. Some have more changes than others. No standard info so no installation. I am trying to get a business rolling. I can't be spending my time with things that do not work, require expertise I do not have to get to work, and/or require System File edits.

I'm giving Kubuntu til the end of 2007 to demonstrate that it is on top of these issues. If by then things have not improved, I will be forced to go back to Microsoft with reluctance, but! out of the need to have things working. I am a Photographer so Video matters! I am starting my own business in photography and need working video.

Thanks for your bugreport.

The issue here is that the cdromupgrade script currently will try to run the gtk frontend. This needs to be fixed.

Cheers,
 Michael
