Bug Description

Install medium:

System:
  Packard Bell EasyNote W3334
  Synaptics touchpad (PS2 port)
  ULi M1573 South Bridge
  ATI Radeon XPress 200M Chipset

Test systems:
Kubuntu Feisty Fawn (upgraded to the same day as this post)
Kubuntu Edgy Eft Live (touchpad works fine on this)

Description:
The Synaptics touchpad on the Feisty system doesn't work at all, When I boot the live Kubuntu Edgy Eft disk, the touchpad works fine.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.
Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems . Thanks in advance!

Robert Grønning (slimg) wrote : Changelog

I began investigating on my own and found out that if the problem is triggered by the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, the latest Edgy version is 0.14.6-0ubuntu3, so the problem must then have been triggered between version 0.14.6-0ubuntu4 and 0.14.6-0ubuntu7. It also seems like the problem isn't source-code related.

Heres the changelog snippet between version 0.14.6-0ubuntu4 and 0.14.6-0ubuntu7:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (0.14.6-0ubuntu7) feisty; urgency=low

  * X and Y size calculations were inverted for edge scrolling
  * Additionally, the values were scaled incorrectly (LP: #95858)

 -- Matthew Garrett <email address hidden> Sun, 25 Mar 2007 16:13:42 +0100

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (0.14.6-0ubuntu6) feisty; urgency=low

  * Set defaults based on values the kernel gives us, rather than making stuff
up in an utterly miserable manner. This upload brought to you by Milton
Nero, a deeply flavoured oat stout.

 -- Matthew Garrett <email address hidden> Sat, 24 Mar 2007 15:08:26 +0000

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (0.14.6-0ubuntu5) feisty; urgency=low

  * Attempt to set more reasonable defaults for appletouch devices. Better
    now, but still not perfect.

 -- Matthew Garrett <email address hidden> Sat, 24 Mar 2007 02:44:11 +0000

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (0.14.6-0ubuntu4) feisty; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Update maintainer fields according to debian-
    maintainer-field spec.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not very computer savvy, so could someone else see if there's something in this changelog that could trigger this bug?

Seems like Edgy and Feisty herd-3 has the same xserver-xorg-input-synaptics version (ubuntu3), so the bug can't be located there.

With my Thinpad T60p the Touchpad also does not work since the Upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04. In Xorg.0.log I find the following:

(WW) Synaptics Touchpad can't grab event device, errno=1022

I don't know if this is important - My Thinkpad T60p has a trackstick and a touchpad. I remember these to be working both with (k)Ubuntu 6.10. With some update already with 6.10 the trackstick stopped working. As it was not so important for me because I don't use it I did not follow this problem. Now with the upgrade to (k)Ubuntu 7.04 the trackstick works again but the touchpad stopped working.

Robert,
Do you still have this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)?
If so please attach the information described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection.

ChrisM,
If you still have this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) it is better to file a new bug report and attach the information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection. Although in both cases your touchpad do not work, the cause of your problem will likely be unrelated to the cause of the problem of Robert because you have different laptop brands and models.
