Gem on feisty does not render simple examples on powerbook using radeon accelerated driver

Binary package hint: gem

examples/01.Basics/01.redsquare gives a black screen on powerbook5,2 with ati 9600 using feisty radeon 3D accelerated driver. glxgears and other openGL apps seem to work fine.

Also destroying the window after rendering leads to the following trace:

Try R300_SPAN_DISABLE_LOCKING env var if this hangs.

I've filed this under bug 61607 certain that its the radeon driver and not gem, the maintainer for xserver-xorg-video-ati suggested filing a report against gem.

My system is up to date, here is the Gem version I'm using: 0.90.0.1-1ubuntu2
