Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When starting OpenOffice for the first time after turning on the computer, there is an error message "ooqstart failed to..." and then I forget what it failed to do.
It doesn't happen after the first time, and it doesn't prevent OpenOffice from functioning, once I click "OK", so just an irritation.

I've never entirely understood what the word "driver" means in a Linux
context. Neither of those shows up when I do lsmod. I feel pretty confident
I don't use nvidia, but I've never heard of the other.

Yes, I can attest to this. I have this problem on both Ubuntu and Kubuntu Feisty, installed with beta cds and fully updated online till today. OOstart freezes or crashes with a few different console outputs. Problem goes away when I switch back to vesa driver on my x1300 ati card (Dell E1505). So this is almost definitely caused by fglrx. I can sometimes have openoffice work if I log in and out a few times switching to Chinese interface and back to English. Not really a repeatable pattern as far as I can see. Of course, after an X server reboot, openoffice always fails again. Below is a thread on the forum that details the error messages and symptoms from a few people including myself. I didn't have any issue in the past with 6.10 and envy's fglrx installer.

Probably a change of fglrx in the repo will help, I'd appreciate it if this could be fixed soon.

I found the problem in my case. It has to do with the combination of fglrx opengl, scim, and open office... kind of weird, and that's why it took me so long to figure out. Apparently this is a LONG existing problem since Dapper or older.

The scim-bridge workaround here works:
