Bug Description

Usplash does not appear until its down to two bars. Up to that point I get a black screen.

Reproduce:
Select shutdown or reboot from the "Log Out..." button in kmenu.

This bug does not happen if you log out to KDM first.

Graphics card: Radeon 9700PRO using open source radeon driver.

Hum. Just tried on a kde box here. I do get the progress bar, but the kubuntu logo is only shown when the machine is about 2 bars from the end.

Repeatable on my side. There is one more detail: I actually see two kubuntu logos flashing on the screen for a fraction of a second, then the progress bar appears (and the logo is nowhere).

This machine has a nVidiaGeForce 6100, with the nVidia restricted module.

Looking at syslog I see two kdm_greet messages, one at bootup stating "Can't open default user face", and one at shutdown stating "Internal error: memory corrupting detected". Don't know if this is related.

So I went into the KDE System Settings/Advanced/Login Manager, and had a look at the tabs -- they looked very much as the default.

Anyway, selected administrator mode, and then clicked on the "Defaults" tab, and applied the changes (none that I could see).

Then repeated the restart process and... usplash works flawlessly.

Not sure how to classify this one: kdm, or usplash.

The plot thickens: I did a dist-upgrade this morning (US CST morning), and restarted: no usplash anymore, not even as we had when this bug was opened.

I can see the monitor trying to go graphical, and reverting back to text mode; a message is flashed on the screen stating that usplash could not find an "usable theme for 1280x1024", and "screen init failed". On reboot, no usplash.

Removed /etc/usplash.conf, rebooted. No usplash image, but a nice video test pattern appeared on shutdown.

Recreated usplash.conf with a resolution of 1024x768 (down from the previously working 1280x1024, and rebooted.

Same messages as before.

Looking at dpkg.log I see an update, this morning, to kubuntu-artwork-usplash 1:7.04-27 (from 1:7.04-26), soI downgraded to -26, recovered my initial usplash config (at 1280x1024 resolution), and rebooted.

I am now back to the reporter's initial problem: on shutdown just the bar, no image, on usplash.

Well, right now, I am setting it as confirmed for usplash.

I think this is actually related to kubuntu-artwork-usplash, but this package is not offered as an option.

Yeah it is since after updating that I now have the same problem as you (getting text instead of usplash).

Is this still an issue in 8.04, 8.10, or 9.04-alpha?
