I don't understand this report. The default graphical theme for Ubuntu doesn't mention a version number at all; and your bug report shows that you have *no* text-based theme configured. What exactly are you seeing?

Changed in plymouth (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Incomplete

note that if this is with the ubuntu-text theme, despite your bug report showing that it's not configured, this is because the plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text only updates its string when this package is upgraded, and there has been no new package version between oneiric and precise. When updating plymouth (which will automatically fix your immediate symptom), we should probably add a trigger that watches /etc/lsb-release.

More details:
- maybe i've wrongly reported against plymouth,
- in fact this "ubuntu 11.10" logo appear under the lightdm login screen, at the bottom left corner
- looking at installed packages related to "oneiric", i've uninstalled syslinux-themes-ubuntu-oneiric (as there is a similar precise already installed), but this dont remove that logo under lightdm login screen (after doing a cold reboot).

Purging two more packages: plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo & plymouth-label
- this is not removing that "logo"
- but get less garbage into xsession-errors (lot of gtk-critical)

So now there are only two related plymouth installed: plymouth & libplymouth2 (all the others have been purged as they seems flooding xsession-errors and are not deeply required by the system)

Some more findings:
-the actual logo used comes from: /usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/UbuntuLogo.png
- there is a 11.10 png for UbuntuLogo, so need a 12.04 now.

- nothing seems actually available to change that png, except this howto via a ppa:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/simple-lightdm-manager.html

summary: - plymouth logo theme not updated to 12.04 on Precise
+ Needs an UbuntuLogo.png updated to 12.04 on Precise

ok, there is a bug here related to the plymouth text fallback that should be addressed, so I'll keep a task open for plymouth; but it sounds like the issue you're seeing is actually with lightdm.

I'd think the package in question is unity-greeter & the png is "/usr/share/unity-greeter/logo.png"
It would seem likely the next update of unity-greeter will take care of this, Precise is still using 11.10's package

The unity-greeter bug is bug 892394 and was mentioned on the Alpha1 Release Notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/TechnicalOverview/Alpha1

I'm deleting the unity-greeter bug task; please follow bug 892394 for that issue. Thanks!

no longer affects: unity-greeter (Ubuntu)

Some more info related to the user config:
- unity-greeter is NOT installed on this system, it has been purged from previous Oneiric installation
- this system is an Oneiric dist-upgrade
- the logo used is the one notified: UbuntuLogo.png, not the supposed one mentionned in post #9 above by Doug
- related to bug #892394: on my system, /usr/share/unity-greeter/logo.png shows an empty logo (blank), so it cant be the one seen under lightdm login screen

So Steve comments in post #8 above are fully trustable and seems to be a second issue to be added to #892394.

heads up
- confirmed again post #11 above
- made some tweak:
edited lightdm.conf to change the default unity-greeter setting (wrongly using the logo from #7) by the lightdm-gtk-greeter, which is more logical on my installation as i've completly purged unity.

What i get:
- now its really the lightdm login screen that is used. And of course there is no logo attached on this screen (compared to the previous unity-greeter setting)

Conclusion:
- plymouth cant be blamed as i understand
- there is a mystery about this default unity-greeter setting into lightdm.conf using the wrong logo
- even with unity-greeter NOT installed, that logo was (is) called.

So this report is close to bug #892394 but also reveal this inconstancy of lightdm.conf
