Garbage characters/not starting when selecting French language (and others)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: checkgmail

When selecting "Français" in CheckGmail preferences, it gives garbage characters for all special characters. Even "Français" is displayed as "Français" and the same issue is present for other languages.

If I select it nevertheless, then checkgmail outputs "Parsing of undecoded UTF-8 will give garbage when decoding entities at /usr/share/perl5/LWP/Protocol.pm line 114." on the command-line and next time I will launch it, it won't start, saying
"Can't use an undefined value as a HASH reference at /usr/bin/checkgmail line 3691.
A thread exited while 2 threads were running."

Running Feisty Fawn with latest upgrades, installed from Herd 4.

I also have the problem, I can't use French for checkgmail on Ubuntu 7.04 x86_64.

Hey, i saw this old bug and would like to help.
Firstly are you still affected by this bug in the latest(lucid) ubuntu release
secondly try : checkgmail -update

Hi, all thank you for taking the time to make Ubuntu better. I am marking this bug fix released since i can use the other languages and checkgmail works fine. Please submit any future bugs yiou may find.
