my comp has problems with shutting down. it seems as though the power button seems to have a problem

Bug Description
i am using ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake.whenever i try shutting down or restarting the computer hangs.i use a dual boot so i have to restart using the reset button every time and shut down from winblows.and then there seems to be a problem with logging out and switching the user.everytime i log out the screen shows scrambled images and gets hanged.
