Bug Description

The NVIDIA GeForce2 MX-400 is not being autodetected on Feisty. Instead, Ubuntu uses the ugly vesa driver.

The autodetection (nv should be used) worked on releases prior to Feisty.

Xorg is using the vesa driver because it does not support your video card (or autodetection fails).

Which video card do you use?

Hi, it's ancient NVIDIA card - GeForce 2 MX, AGP 4X with 64MB memory. It seems that Feisty does not get along with it. I also tried to install nvidia restricted drivers for it (sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-legacy), but then X would crash at startup (had to copy back the old xorg.conf from the backup).

I have this problem only on new Feisty installation. When I updated from Edgy to Feisty (apt-get dist-upgrade, etc.), there was no such problems.

Update: according to the information printed on system startup, it's NVIDIA GeForce2 MX-400, Bios version 3.11.01.48MB6. Hope this helps.

Okay, so auto detection fails with Feisty.

Just a work around for you:

In xorg.conf replace

 Driver "vesa"

with

 Driver "nv"

Changed in xorg:
status: Needs Info → Confirmed
description: updated

Looks like this is not the only card that makes problems. See Bug #87003.

The newest discover-data release should fix this. Please retry with a daily livecd-snapshot or the beta which is released next week, and reopen if it still fails.

Still didn't work on March 17 daily build. Feisty uses the same old 'vesa' driver both when booted from LiveCD/installed on HDD. Did March 17 build include the updated discover-data? Should I also test beta release when it becomes available?
