I have not been able to get a backtrace because I don't think that program is crashing but rather it won't load. The same error will occur when you either log in or try to add the volume or mixer applets to the panel.

The title is confusing if it's not crashing ;) Could you run /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 from a command line then try to add the applet to the panel and note to a comment what is printed on the command line?

I initially thought it was crashing but realized after filing the bug report that it was having problems loading. By trying to run the application from the command line per your instruction I discovered that the gnome applets package was no longer installed. I tried to apt-get install it but it failed due to a dependency problem. After updating the system with the latest packages today I was able install the gnome-applets package.

I am new to gnome (I have been a long time kde user) so I was unaware of the names of the applet binaries.

Thanks again for your help!

no problem, closing the bug then. If you use an unstable version of the distribution you might want to use apt-get update which doesn't remove applications like that
