I can reproduce this bug, running Ubuntu 7.04 on a Powerbook 5,6. I had this problem with Ubuntu 6.10, too.

 # glxinfo | grep direct

give you on console?

are videos rendered using some acceleration??
if so radeon cards have *very poor* quality, using the open source driver

I have a mobility 9700

Maybe you can try if the non free drivers improve your performance?

Imight suspect that the hi CPU usage is caused by the radeon
opensource driver (I have an r300 card)
Can anyone try with fglrx?

I've experienced this today on AMD 5600+ X2 machine with nVidia propretory drivers on 8600GT graphics with Fiesty 64 bit. 84% CPU on gnash process ( all available ) makes everything run very very slow.

Gtk-gnash has very high processor usage, often steadily at 100% , on my computer (Athlon 3000+ on A8N-VM-CSM with nvidia driver) as well.

Hardy version of gnash still have this problem.
Putting back to confirmed, since it is also available on intel graphics.

I doubt this is related to the video driver in use. I am suffering this problem frequently on Hardy (updated to almost-8.04.1) and on an Intel i915GMS (using xserver-xorg-video-intel).

Note that gtk-gnash keeps eating away CPU in the background, even if Firefox has been quit long ago. "killall gtk-gnash" cures the problem.
