Bug Description

I can no longer install Ubuntu Server on my pandaboard, using the same automated process that worked last week.

The installer appears to work successfully but then I get no output after reboot. If I remove "quiet splash" then I get the attached output, in what appears to be an infinite loop.

Directed by ppisati in #ubuntu-arm, the following workaround works: ro rootwait elevator=noop vram=32M mem=456M@0x80000000 mem=512M@0xA0000000 root=UUID=$YOURUUIDHERE fixrtc console=tty0 console=ttyO2,115200n8

I have checked with someone (James Page) who has an installation of 3.2.0-1403 - his boot.scr appears to be identical to mine (before I applied the workaround). So this appears to be a kernel regression to me - I can find nothing else that has changed.

I am able to reproduce this issue here. Problem is with the latest kernel, nothing to do with netinstall (I can reproduce it on a preinstalled image). The screen output from the kernel shows a continuous segfault during kernel boot, prior to init.

Since this is stopping all work for me (image testing, test automation development, etc), I have marked it as critical.

this the CMA:

[ 0.330535] __alloc_from_contiguous: count=64, order=6
[ 0.330810] Trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs...
[ 0.339477] DMA: failed to allocate 256 KiB pool for atomic coherent allocation
...
[ 2.593322] __alloc_from_pool: coherent pool not initialised!

reverting it fixes it.

This is more of a netinstall bug than a kernel bug (but the latest kernel with CMA change exposes it). The actual problem of not having the cmdline parameters is in bug 921137 (as it also has other implications than just the memory hole parameters).

this is a kernel issue, and was fixed in 3.2.0-1405.7.
