Same for me, HP Pavillion dv6276ea with Nvidia GeForce Go 7400.

If I install the drivers from binary (downloaded from Nvidia website) compiz works fine.

Fiesty-32 ATI AMD 64 Great Quality Laptop. I had problems with screens on rare occassions after using many Firefox screens.
I followed directions to "Enable Desktop Effects." But each time the two options at the bottom of the screen that came up
were greyed out. I went online and accepted about 79 upgrades. But I did not try to do anything with compiz until today.

Today, I was filling out a form for a PHP website. The form hung there with info from other places. I should have rebooted as before.
I did system > preferences > enable gl. The screen turned white and would not do anything for several minutes.
I rebooted. The screen was white and I could not progress.
I rebooted into the second option.
I did not know what to do in cli as root.
I booted on livecd to try to find a fix. I could not so I made this report.
Please tell me what to do to recover my system like it was before I clicked "Enable GL" and got the white screen

This is the wrong area to be asking for immediate support. Since you need a quick response I recommend using one methods outlined on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport .
