Bug Description

On a couple of occasions now whilst using firefox I've had the GPU lock up on me.

[ 60580.875] [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

The laptop hasn't been suspended, but has been on for 17 hours and has had the browser open all that time. This is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened in the last week. Pretty sure I'm always in Firefox. Tabs include gmail, twitter, google calendar (x2), facebook, youtube, google docs, Google+ and a few intranet pages. I recently watched an embedded youtube flash video - a few minutes before the crash occured.

I'm using unity 3d, and also have thunderbird, a terminal, tomboy and shutter open.

Had this again, triggered when someone gave me a link to a G+ page which contains an embedded flash (youtube) video and some photos. I was able to play the short video but the display became very laggy and eventually unresponsive.

Again, this time I was just switching workspaces and it bailed part way through the move from one desktop to the other.

Sadly due to it being a proprietary driver there's not really much we can do for diagnosing gpu lockups. (The backtrace isn't interesting; the fault is in the kernel driver, not X, and the crash is just a symptom. GPU lockups always produce that same backtrace.)

The one thing to do is to test new upstream nvidia drivers as they become available, until one is found that solves this issue.

If the bug is reproducible down to a specific set of steps that reproduce the lockup more than 50% of the time, Alberto can probably escalate the bug with NVIDIA.

Thanks Bryce. I have since disposed of this laptop (to a family member, running OSX instead of Ubuntu) and have replaced it with a non-nVidia one. So unfortunately I won't be doing any further testing on this bug, sorry.

Since the hardware is no longer available for doing troubleshooting with, we'll have to close the bug for now. However please feel free to reopen if you or anyone else has the same HW and can reproduce this issue using the latest development version of Ubuntu and is willing to do some troubleshooting with it.

This is still present with latest driver and latest kernel. I've tried all sorts of combinations with kernel/driver version.

Right now am running:
Linux Kernel 3.5.0-10-generic
nVidia Driver 304.37

nVidia seems to be unable to reproduce this and doesn't really look interested to fix the issue in the first place. As far as I've seen this happens a lot with GT520 cards. In my case, my system boots normally once in ever 10 tries. Not a stability I expect from Linux system.
