Bug Description

Binary package hint: vegastrike

Package: vegastrike
Version: 0.4.3-5
Severity: normal

Hello,

with the following configuration am the vegastrike 0.4.3-5 package from
"http://de.archive.ubuntu.com edgy/universe" I get music, but no sound
(e.g. Laser Shots). There are no significant error messages if I start
vegastrike in an terminal.

  martin@Luna:/usr/share/doc/reportbug$ env | grep -i "sdl"
  SDL_AUDIODRIVER=arts

  martin@Luna:/usr/share/doc/reportbug$ cat ~/.openalrc
  (define devices '(arts alsa native))

If I then simply downgrade to vegastrike 0.4.3-4ubuntu3 from
"http://de.archive.ubuntu.com dapper/universe" without any other changes
sound and music are working without problems.

I can send you extracts from both versions running under strace, generated
with the following command:
strace vegastrike 2>&1 | egrep -i "version|alsa|esd|arts|sound|music|audio" > strace-vegastrike-0.4.3-...

Thanks,
martin

please go to the vegastrike website and download the .run file,

then install it... See if sound works in that

I'm experimenting quite a same behavior using vegastrike with kubuntu feisty...

But, I don't have any sound at all : no music, no sound effects, nothing...

My kde sound system seems to work fine since testing sound from kde control panel is OK and sound is OK when playing video or music too...

lspci -v returns :
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
        Subsystem: Intel Corporation D865PERL mainboard

        Memory at febff400 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
        Capabilities: <access denied>

This is an AC'97 compatible chip. With no hardware mixing, I suppose... :-(

kernel modules are all well loaded since audio is OK for others applications...

my openAL config file (~/.openalrc) is :
(define devices '(arts alsa native))

Sound related messages at startup are :

Could not open aRts library: libartsc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

But libartsc is installed !!!

dpkg -s libartsc0 returns "install ok installed" and /usr/lib/libartsc.so.0 is present.

Thus I can't figure where the message "Could not open aRts library: libartsc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" is coming from

Is the second message "ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave" is due to the fact that dmix is not configured out of the box in feisty ?

Thanks for any help...
