Bug Description

Dual-boot Ubuntu 11.10 / Windows XP

A French user reported the following bug on ubuntu-fr forum (http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=7889101#p7889101) : his Windows XP boot.ini was deleted twice by 2 Ubuntu updates. More details below:

- After Ubuntu update on 21st Jan 2012, XP's boot.ini file has been deleted. (Boot-Info Summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/812127 ).
Consequency: after reboot, boot on XP bacame impossible.
Workaround: regenerating a boot.ini file solved the problem.

- After Ubuntu update on 29th Jan 2012 (including 3.0.0-15 kernel), XP's boot.ini file was deleted again. (summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/821120 )
Consequency: same
Workaround: same

Remark: I personnaly also have a XP / 11.10 dualboot but didn't reproduced the bug.

Remark2: we can observe that in 2nd case os-prober detected XP despite the missing boot.ini file.

There really isn't enough information to proceed here. We need to know which packages were installed as a part of the update process to determine what went wrong. The files /var/log/apt/term.log and /var/log/apt/history.log would both help here.

I was able to download the file, but when I opened it there was nothing there. Could you try and send the log files by themselves?

I don't know what you did wrong Rajiv, but I can read the log files just fine. Unfortunately they do not show that grub was updated on that day. As Brain said, there isn't enough information to proceed here. We would need to know how to reproduce this to continue.
