I´ve had chance to look a bit more at this problem and it appears it isn´t confined to Update-manager. It effects any program with a progress bar. Instead of an orange bar moving across any text in the area is just converted from black to white as it moves across. It only effects my i810 based machine. I´ve tried both the i810 and vesa drivers and they give the same results.

Thanks for this additional information.

Do you use the default theme? Do you use berrly or compiz?

Thanks,

I have observed the same bug. I use the default theme with no beryl or compiz. It only seems to affect machines with the i810 graphics chipset. I've observed it both in gimp, ufraw and update-manager (all using gtk+ progress bar).

Niels Kristian
