Bug Description

Binary package hint: amarok

Essentially, the album art is not present in the OSD popup every single time. I have not yet deciphered a pattern as to why certain album refuse to have their album art show up. So although i can't figure out why certian albums are effected, it is however clear that those albums whose album art does not show are consistent. It is always the same albums that have missing art. I've tried unmount and redownloading the art and even setting custom covers but to no avail.

I cant help but think this somehow has to do with the fact that i recently switched to ubuntu edgy 6.10 and imported my music from iTunes to Amarok 1.4.5. I do not know how to recreate this issue and seeing as its only an aesthetic bug it doesn't seem to pertinent to fix but still worthy of noting. Also, i have screenshots to proove this bug should they be necessary.

Possible solution:
Rewriting the ID3 tags with EasyTag can fix this problem.
Rewriting the tags is also a good idea if other apps or devices have similar problems.

This occurs when the album artwork is saved as an in-line image in the mp3 file (in the ID3 tag) and as a file (eg. folder.jpg) in the album folder at the same time.
Since I dual-boo with Mac OS X on my MacBook iTunes and Amarok share the same music collection. The thing is, that iTunes always sets it's CD covers in-line and other apps only use a folder.jpg. The actual problem is that the album artwork does not work on iPods synced with Amarok any more, since Amarok seems to be confused wether it should upload the in-line albumart or the folder.jpg to the iPod.

Amarok can't store the album images inline because of the license from Amazon (where it gets the cover art from)...the art must be refetched/refreshed after a certain number of days (which I believe is generally done automatically). Storing the images in the file would make it near impossible to provide any certainty that we were complying with the license.

I'm not sure where iTunes gets its images from, but I imagine it has to do with a music store that it has access to and somewhat controls the rights of...

That being said, I can't help you as I don't have an iPod so can't test things out; perhaps another developer can, or you can hack at the code yourself and submit a patch :-)

1) Please try upgrading your Amarok, does this fix your issue?
2) Since this issue is very difficult to reproduce (lots of applications involved) I will mark it as Incomplete, so maybe some developer can try to reproduce and fix it in a 60 day time frame, if nothing happens the bug will be closed, which seams most appropriate because the reported issue is already quite old.

No, the problem still exists. All in all it seems to be an OSD-problem. I simply cannot believe that it is not possible to tell the Amarok OSD to prefer the inline image over the external image (or vice versa) or just to use the exact same image that Amarok displays in the sidebar.

Actually, in my opinion, it is not very hard to reproduce: you just need an mp3 file with an inline image sitting in a directory with a folder.jpg file (which should be the same as the inline image).

Btw.: iPod cover art is not affected by this issue. It's just the OSD.

Removing redundant amarok tag since this bug will appear in amarok searches/lists anyway.

Does this still happen with Amarok2?
