network-admin freezes when /etc/network/interfaces is missing

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

If you erase /etc/network/interfaces network-admin freezes on startup. I believe network-admin should deal with this error condition by creating a new interfaces file containing at least entries for the loopback device. Don't know if it should try also to create entries for the other devices found, as this could interact badly with network-manager.

Forgot to mention: As usually I would try to create a patch, once we decided how to solve this.

on feisty just tried

cd /etc/network/
sudo mv interfaces interfaces.hide
gksu network-admin

and it works fine. if i make any changes and exit it creates a new interfaces file. though this lacked a 'lo' entry

Thank you for your bug. It works fine on my desktop without the interfaces configuration. Could you a backtrace for the hang?

Also failed to reproduce right now. Difference between reporting and now: I have network-manager disabled again. Will check again with network manager running later on.

Sam, Sebastien: Do avoid accidently focusing on network-manager as part of the problem - did you have it running?
