Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Problem description:
After installing Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) the laptop resolution was set to 1024x768 instead of the native 1280x800. Attempting to change the resolution to 1280x800 (via System->Preferences->Screen resolution) leads to screen corruption (see attached image). Feisty Faw Herd 5 LiveCD exhibits the same behavior (I did not actually installed it on the HDD).

Workaround:
Adding the native resolution to xorg.conf makes it possible to change the resolution without getting screen corruption.

Notes:
1 – The laptop seems to be supported on OpenSuSE 10.1 (see http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Laptops/Medion last entry in the list). I am downloading the SuSE 10.2 LiveDVD right now in order to give it a try.
2 – According to another note on http://www.math.hu-berlin.de/~kulshres/guestbook.php (german) both SuSE 10.1 and Fedora Core 5 run out of the box.
3 – This laptop comes preinstalled with Cyberlink PowerCinema for Linux (a media player running on a minimal Linux) and this runs correctly at the native resolution. Thanks to GPL&Co., a lot of source code (including xorg, kernel) is available at http://www.cyberlink.com/english/products/powercinema/pcm-linux/pcmlinuxgpl.jsp (150 MB download). It you need specific files from this big bundle let me know and I'll upload them here.

Running Feisty Beta from CD, I've got exactly the same problem, including the screen corruption, on an Asus M6Ne with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (I think).
I'll attach my output of xresprobe, ddcprobe, and lspci.

Not much can be done for now, since the monitor does not return the needed information with xresprobe.

Timo, thanks for your help!

Is there an upstream for xresprobe where I could continue this investigation? Or there's something wrong/not compliant about this display and I should simply drop it? Maybe contacting the manufacturer would prove usefull?

Well, you could try to run X without xorg.conf (move it aside). It should be able to get the EDID/DDC data from the monitor. In future (feisty+1->) we will rely more on the server giving us the needed information. Xresprobe is of old Ubuntu heritage, and not maintained anymore.

Marking as a dupe of bug 94994 due to edidfail. Please feel free to un-dupe if there's a reason this bug should be kept separate.

There is a small difference between this bug report and bug 94994. While both here and in 94994 there is the edidfail, for this bug the xresprobe returns the correct screen resolution (see the two attachments). This does not happen in bug 94994. I don't know if this is relevant enough to make a difference, I just wanted to make sure that this detail is not overlooked.

Hi Flavius,

Well, that's a good point. I still think it may be strongly related to the other issue, but you're right this deserves separate consideration. If it turns out it is solved by the same thing, we can dupe it then.

Today I've tested Ubuntu 7.10 beta and this bug is no longer present. The proper resolution is used and there is no screen corruption. As far as I am concerned this bug has been solved and can be closed.
