I've been able to hack the issue into submission using the attached patch.
This is definitely a hack and not a "proper" patch.
Basically, it intercepts the code that reads the UUID out of the MBR and zeros it, meaning that all SD cards (and partitions on other devices for that matter) appear to have a zero UUID.
