Thank you for your bug. Could you attach your /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog and /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Does it happen if you use the ati driver?

When instead of logging out I try to reset gdm using control-alt-back space I get to a console but gdm doesn't reload.

and now /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains three extra lines:

Synaptics DeviceOff called
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0x1f7000 at 0xb7c8d000

To allow me to log in I then have to:

sudo killall gdm
sudo gdm

I can confirm this bug on my Radeon Xpress 200M based laptop. Yes, it only happens with the fglrx driver.

There is a workaround that I have found that perhaps the restricted device manager could apply for Xpress 200M machines.

System->Administration->Login Window

and then set it to restart the Xserver with each login.

Seems to paper over the problem. ATI is not famous for quick bug fixes to their Linux drivers.

I have this same problem, but I'm using Kubuntu. Is there any way to have KDM do the same thing, i.e. reboot X on logout?

The fix to this would be to have the newest ATI driver (8.36.5) added to the restricted modules.

I just installed it manually, and so far it seems to resolve the issue for me. The instructions I followed can be found here: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Feisty_Installation_Guide

correction. that version of fglrx causes sound problems for me. i play an mp3, for instance, and it starts "skipping"

blargh. i hate ATI :)

Confirmed, this is reported fixed in newer fglrx.

It should have been fixed, at least on some cases.

The latest fglrx driver still hangs my Debian lenny system. However, it works fine under Ubuntu 7.04. To solve this hang after logout issue, I removed fglrx shipped with Ubuntu, downloaded fglrx 8.37.6 from ATI, generated Ubuntu packages with it, installed and it worked.

I have a Compaq Presario V2424NR with the same XPRESS 200M 5955 card. Had dozes of severe issues with this card + ATI drivers under Debian, but it surprising works fine now on Ubuntu.

This is fixed with the 8.37.6 fglrx in Gutsy, so the bug can be closed. However, if anyone still experiences the issue even with this new driver, please reopen and let us know.
