Desktop effect cannot be activated after having used the restricted manager

Bug Description
As the desktop effect were a bit buggy after my fresh Ubuntu installation, I have used the restricted drivers manager to install my ATI proprietary driver (I have a Radeon 9600XT).
Using the proprietary driver does not permit to use the Desktop Effect because "the composite extension is not available", so says the desktop effect tool.

That is correct. ATI's binary video driver does not provide the composite extension.
