I have the same problem. When the disk is removed and another inserted, new icon shows up, but the previous one stays (but when opened, leads to the new disk). The second icon disappears after reboot without disk in the drive.
My configuration:
Laptop MSI EX600
DVD drive LG GSA-T20N
Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Same thing happens to me with Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

I also get the same exact problem (sometimes) with other external drives (USB external disk for instance).

bug 250218 confirms that this problem exists in Gutsy, so I will mark this bug Confirmed since others have also had the problem, and nominate for Gutsy. Can anybody Confirm this for Hardy or Intrepid development?

Nominated for Intrepid based on duplicate bug 251965 screenshot. Awaiting response for possible (and likely) nomination in Hardy.
