Bug Description
Binary package hint: xemacs21-mule
Not sure that the problem is actually in the xemacs package.
Since updating to feisty, curly braces '{}' are displayed as square braces '[]'. The data in the files is still correct and when editing text the actually typed brace is written to the file, so it looks kind of like a font problem.
Also, when starting up xemacs-mule, I get this error message, but this was already the case before updating to feisty:
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
And inside xemacs
(1) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't get fontset resource for Input Method
This error message does not appear for the xemacs21-gnome-mule package, but the braces are incorrectly shown there too.
Package versions (I tried purging and reinstalling all xemacs packages):
xemacs21-
xemacs21-
xemacs21-
xemacs21-
xemacs21-
xemacs21_
xemacs21-

I don't see this (running a fresh install of Feisty beta), and I agree it sounds like a font problem.
I do get the "Missing charsets" warning, though - no practical consequences so far.
Do you have old cruft in your .emacs or .xemacs/ perhaps? Or in .Xdefaults or similar (xrdb -q)? Try removing and restarting?
Try with '-fn fixed' (or another font)?
