Bug Description

Libreoffice Math is installed and is able to be run by launching the generic libreoffice launcher and choosing the "formula" option, but it is not showing in my applications list. I have entries for all of the libreoffice programs except for Math. I do not know if this is planned or accidental, but it should definitely change.

NoDisplay=true was added to math.desktop in this commit:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=369f22ceb8b3440d8caf1d60d7f45abc1d5ac258

due to this bug:

https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41681

And there is a Ubuntu bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/953669 requesting that it be removed, as at least two users are confused about why LibreOffice disappeared from their menus/Unity launcher. Can we please get an official consensus on whether or not this line should exist in the .desktop file, and, if not, can it be removed from the file?

The .desktop file for LibreOffice was changed to include NoDisplay=true due to https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=41681, as the reporter said that "it is just [a] trivial extension
that users usually don't want to run themselves." I will forward this bug upstream to confirm that this decision agrees with the developers' views about the program.

Bjorn, is it possible to close this as wontfix or do Ubuntu specific hack?
I think that Ubuntu users are rather doing nitpicking than being really confused :-)

I do not have any strong opinion but I would prefer to keep it hidden. IMHO, Math does not make much sense as a standalone application. It just bloats the desktop menu. It has been hidden in openSUSE for years.

This was intentionally removed upstream. Please continue upstream, if you explicitly want back the old behavior.

From Fedora's POV, we added NoDisplay=true at one time based on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=156677 and then removed it again ~6 months ago, because we were getting more bug reports asking for Math in the menu, e.g., https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=274631 and others. So it is plain there is no way to satisfy everyone...

I think that the situation with math is a bit confusing: on one side we hide it from system menus and it is way down in File->New menu, on the other side it is there alongside the other applications in the start screen. So we do allow to easily open Math from libreoffice, but not from the system... We should either remove that button too (what I prefer), or recognize Math as top-level application and remove the NoDisplay=true again (what Fedora users, at least the vocal ones, prefer). Now choose :-)

From an Ubuntu POV displaying math is preferable IMHO as we are mapping windows to different apps (writer/calc/...) via bamf etc. -- so having it displayed would be good there too.

Ah, this bug has been opened for more than 1 year. Bjoern has closed the Ubuntu bug as wontfix. We have done 2 more release with the NoDisplay=true. I guess that Ubuntu users has got used to this. I do not see other complains. So, let's leave it as is.
