will do a fresh install on tuesday and try again - will include the logs!

andrew

(and i will also try your wacom package on a tablet pc (fujitsu siemens).
i understand that i just download your package and then use synaptic to
include it (how exactly - from my disk??).

it would be wonderful to have 'out of the box' support for the wacom stylus!
(does your fix include the rotation of the screen together with the
rotation of wacom?)

thank you!

andrew

I have the same problem as Andrew Frank. I don't use Google Earth very often, and have made a few changes to the system. They might be related. Finally, I've got 1920x1200 resolution working on my PC with intel graphics, by installing xserver-xorg-video-intel which replace the package xserver-xorg-video-i810. I still have 915resolution installed; I don't know if it's needed.

Back to Google Earth. The logo splash screen of Earth appears, then the desktop crashes.
I'll attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Can confirm here. On a dell Inspiron 6000 with an Intel GMA 950 graphics card, google-earth as installed from medibuntu crashes my X session, sending me back to the login.

Seems I had a .deb from elsewhere installed. Uninstalling that and reinstalling googleearth package from feisty medibuntu repositories cleared things up.

Note that the feisty version is 'googleearth', not 'google-earth'. Both packages are floating around, and the one I was having trouble with was 'google-earth'.

I had the same problem Google Earth crashed Xorg on Feisty.
I have Intel 945GM graphics installed whilst trying to resolve another issue installed xserver-xorg-video-intel and reconfigured xorg to use this new driver instead of i810 (a step Helge Stenström's xorg.conf file suggests that he hasn't taken).
This has solved the issue Google Earth now works fine.

Adam, interesting that the new -intel fixed the issue. Which version of the -intel driver did you use (it tells you in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file).

Andrew, can you also try installing the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver, changing "i810" to "intel" in your xorg.conf, and see if that resolves the problem for you too?

On the other hand, I have a situation where a program (Amaya) craches
under -intel, but not under -i810. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amaya/+bug/50113/ I'm
notsure where to file that; it doesn't seem to be a bug in just Amaya.

I think that this is the relevant part of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file:

Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
 compiled for 7.2.0, module version = 14.94.94
 Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.1

Using this driver has also resolved (at least to a large degree) the
issues I was having with connecting an external screen to the laptop too.

Same Problem!

I Have a Matrox G200, on a Pentium 1Ghz and I Installed 'googleearth' package as sugested above.

I also checked the xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200 AGP"
 Driver "mga"
 BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
 Option "OldDmaInit" "True"
EndSection

and even added the Frame Buffer Option (which totally crashed my X, so I reverted)

I'm simply not able to start GGEarth, it totally crashes my X. (Retunrs to Login window.

Also tried to do the same on another PC and diferent Video card, Same result.... (This one was a Compaq Desktop)

Xorg.0.log.old reports in the end:
