Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

This is perhaps a duplicate of bug #78470, but I want to make sure this gets covered. I'm also fairly sure that desktop-effects itself is not the problem, but I'm not sure of a better package under which to file this.

If I have Desktop Effects enabled and switch users, when I log out of the second user, the first user's password screen never appears. My mouse cursor is movable, and I actually see it switch to a text cursor (I-beam) when over the center of the screen, but the screen remains black and the keyboard indicator lights do not respond. (One thing I have not tried is to connect to the machine remotely; I wonder if the system is still functional underneath X.)

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.04
Uname: Linux edwin-ubuntu 2.6.20-12-generic #2 SMP Wed Mar 21 20:55:46 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Do you have a nvidia card?

This seems to be a duplicate of Bug #91414

Yes, an NVidia. Here's the output from lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

Keep in mind that I'm not sure that the machine has actually crashed when this happens, so I'm not sure that other bug is the same issue.

Hi Andrew

Can you reproduce it without Compiz enabled?

Well, if I turn Desktop Effects off, I can switch users fine. I think that's a "no" to your question, but I'm not sure. :)

I have the same problem.
My "cure" is to switch to a text console and pkill compiz. Metacity then starts and all is well, and I can switch back to that desktop.
If I have clicked the mouse then I can't get a text console so I have to ssh in to kill compiz

my lspci is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

This is a bug in the nvidia driver.

I see the same problem also using the accelerated nivdia driver, compiz enabled and when logging off from a user I switched to. Is this then a duplicate of some other bug or is this the correct bug to watch for the fix? Thanks.

This looks similar to Bug #88152

Andrew:
Does disabling sync to vblank by doing
gconftool -s /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/sync_to_vblank-t boolean false
make any difference?
