The volume keys that are set in gnome keyboard shortcut preferences are however work nicely, they change the volume and the current volume overlay appears when I use them.

I can confirm this bug. None of the XF86 Audio keys works after I upgraded to feisty final release version.

I have a similar problem- I'm getting the overlay and a volume meter change or mute symbol shown on the overlay, but there's no effect on the actual volume control app. Any clues?

Running hardy, they worked before updating to it.

xmms-xf86audio was removed from Ubuntu repository since Ubuntu 8.04 because xmms was removed. So we will not fix this bug.
