Bug Description

hud-service is consistently taking > 10% of CPU time, which is more than compiz. This is a high proportion of a reasonably beefy machine (i7 quad-core 1.87-3.2 GHz). I have used the HUD in this session, but it this CPU time is being spent even when the HUD is not actually in use.

I don't think this is a duplicate of bug #938584, because the reporter said "When I stop typing this CPU consumption continues on for several seconds afterwards.", implying that it does stop consuming CPU after several seconds.

My symptom was that hud-service continues to use significant CPU even when the HUD is not in use.

I can confirm constant high CPU usage of the hud-service process no matter if I use the head-up display or not.

It is constantly at 3-4% on a 1,6 GHz Atom CPU - for nothing!

Using Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity.

Correction/completion to my previous comment:

The CPU usage of hud-service is constantly at 3-4% on this machine when the "System Load Indicator" (a panel indicator) is running.

When I quit System Load Indicator, it the CPU usage drops to nothing (as long as HUD is not in use).

I wrote a new bug #1001072 for System Load Indicator.
