Bug Description
Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx
Machine: Dell C521
Video Card: Radeon X1300
When configuring xorg.conf to use ati, radeon, or fglrx driver screen goes black when X starts after boot sequence. GDM doesn't display, and X won't restart with ctl-alt-backspace command. Only vesa driver will allow X to start and provide user with GDM and gui.

I have a dell X1400 which is very similar to yours and runs fine here.
Did you remember to change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to include changing the driver to fglrx? Take a look at the wiki page for help.
