The terminal log reads:

----------
Processing triggers for cups ...
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog
debconf: (Dialog frontend requires a screen at least 13 lines tall and 31 columns wide.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline
start: Job failed to start
invoke-rc.d: initscript cups, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing cups (--unpack):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
----------

It seems that the update is run on a too small terminal and debconf falls back to Readline then and Readline does not work. Not a problem of CUPS, but of debconf's fallback mechanism.

affects: cups (Ubuntu) → debconf (Ubuntu)
