incorrect category in 'Applications' menu

Bug Description

Binary package hint: labplot

Labplot's category in the Applications menu is not correct. It should be in 'Other' (along with 'fityk' and 'wxMaxima'), not in 'Education'. It is not an educational program; it's a scientific one.

I think that the 'Other' category is unfortunate, but I believe the fault there lies with GNOME.

Hello, excuse me, have you installed labplot on Gnome or on KDE please ?
Because the debian/menu looks like that :
?package(labplot):needs="X11"\
section="Apps/Math"\
hints="KDE"\
title="LabPlot"\
command="/usr/bin/labplot"\
icon="/usr/share/pixmaps/labplot.xpm
EOF
I haven't KDE but it seems to be the right section no ("Apps/Math") ?

notice: It is quite possible that what i'm saying is totaly stupid, I've just started in bugfixes so... ^^

Hari,

That is the menu item for the Debian menu, which is not used in Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses the freedesktop.org standard for menus. The menu items are .desktop files located in /usr/share/applications/

As for the original bug. This is a bit of an issue. According to the freedesktop.org desktop file spec Science isn't a toplevel menu entry. Education is the closest thing. So this isn't even really a Gnome issue, I don't think.

Hello.

According to Jordan Mantha (MOTU Team), Adrien Cunin (MOTU Team) and Lionel Le Folgoc (MOTU Team), this bug is rejected.
Here are the reason :

First, the bug is not a part of Ubuntu but a problem in Gnome and freedesktop.org. Jordan Mantha has made a bugreport of that in Gnome but it seems to be rejected.

Second, you can see in the Registered Category of freedesktop.org[1] that the submenu 'Science' is valid and have the related category 'Education' id est it can be defined like that : Application/Education/Science like freedesktop.org's policy seems to say it. But Gnome didn't use the submenues (in our case the 'Science' one).

I reject this bug by quoting Jordan Mantha : "it's a bit of an unfortunate bug".

In fine, thanks to the three MOTUs for the help they brought me in the resolution of this bug.
