My drive is also not auto-recognized in the Settings box, but it does seem to show up in the main window. The device is /dev/hdc and if I try to add it in manually I get constant crashes, identical to my bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/k9copy/+bug/109245

At this point I don't want to change *any* settings in the Settings area until this is fixed up.

I'm experiencing the same isssue under jaunty and karmic...
The default device is set on /dev/sr0 with name DVDR-k17, but k9 is unable to open that device...

I setup manually the dvd device to /dev/scd0, and then it worked
