Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15

I have only been on linux for a year. I went from a Celeron D 2.66ghz on a Foxconn motherboard to a E4300 on a ASRock 775-dual VSTA. Stock bios. No overclocking. I noticed this error within my dmesg and not sure if I have a bad cpu or if it's a bug? Can anyone comment on this. Here is the output from dmesg | grep ACPI, /proc/cpuinfo and lspci.

Is this still an issue with later releases?

Thanks for the information.
To expand on the bug report, does the system suffer any functional/operational problems related to ACPI?
The logs show that no Differentiated System Description Table was found.
Can you attach the file produced from the following command?:
sudo biosdecode > biosdecode.txt
Thanks.

not that I am aware of but then again I don't know exactly what ACPI does.
I use mythtv and I get this error all the time in my kern.log.
Mar 22 21:30:20 UBUNTU kernel: [747271.849283] ivtv0: All encoder MPEG stream buffers are full. Dropping data.
Mar 22 21:30:21 UBUNTU kernel: [747271.849288] ivtv0: Cause: the application is not reading fast enough.
I have even changed the mpeg buffers from the default to 16MB but I still get these errors. I haven't tried a new PCI slot for the PVR-350. My recordings are ok for the most part but it does drop some frames once in awhile.

I have attached the file you requested after performing that command.

No, MythTV messages are unrelated.

OK. Re-read your Feisty dmesg. The following line indicates a likely BIOS bug:
"ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... file /DSDT.aml not found, using machine DSDT"
This is not uncommon. In your situation it appears to be related to just gathering some CPU related information.

1/ You could check whether your hardware manufacturer has a BIOS upgrade available.
2/ You could try a later Ubuntu release (if this has become a known bios bug a workaround may be included in a later release).

There are other methods involving creating custom DSDT.aml but these are not trivial. Search Google on the above error message and you will find them. See here for some background: http://gaugusch.at/kernel.shtml )

It appears your system is fully functional. In the absence of an identifiable operational problem it's difficult to suggest a path forward. It maybe best to do nothing unless a lack of functionality or disfunction is discovered.

Correction to my previous comment regarding: "file /DSDT.aml not found".
Don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that!
This is normal. It simply means you haven't provided a custom DSDT ie. you are using DSDT in BIOS.
However, having said that, the error message you report does result from a poorly constructed DSDT in BIOS. Again, this is not uncommon.
All other previous comments still stand.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 kernel task. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release is set to come out at the end of the month. It contains a newer 2.6.27 kernel. It would be good to confirm if this is still an issue with Intrepid - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please add the linux kernel task to this bug report. This can by done by going to:

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/98726/+distrotask

Then change the Source Package Name to be "linux" instead of "linux-source-2.6.20" and click Continue. Thanks.
